Pretty as Pie

Noticed at 12:33 June 30th, 2008

http://www.willmcgugan.com/2008/06/29/pretty-as-pie/ asks Hoosgot,

I’ve just spend a couple of hours dusting off an old project of mine, that involved generating pretty 3D pie charts by combining Mako templates with the Povray scene description language. I improved the image quality by enabling radiosity, and the end result is quite appealing (see below). Now I’m thinking that there may be some people out

SSL as default på lagen.nu

Noticed at 12:25 June 30th, 2008

http://blog.tomtebo.org/2008/06/30/ssl-as-default-pa-lagennu/ asks Hoosgot,

Open source webcasting?

Noticed at 16:30 June 28th, 2008

http://skyfaller.livejournal.com/121347.html asks Hoosgot,

SPARC is looking for some open source webcasting software to replace the proprietary software they are currently using, Infinite Conferencing. The crucial functionality they need is: (1) Slide delivery - They need to be able to conduct a powerpoint/slideshow presentation over the web in a user-friendly manner, without having to download any plugins. I am unclear on how Infinite does this, Jennifer suggested that it might be ActiveX, but that would only work on Windows/IE and she also claims to have used it on a Mac, so that can’t be right. (2) Text chat - IRC + web portals should be good enough to handle this? If we could do those two things in an open source fashion, they could just

Canada is preserving artifacts from my c …

Noticed at 15:09 June 27th, 2008

http://rockettscience.com/2008/06/23/canada-is-preserving-artifacts-from-my-childhood/ asks Hoosgot,

During a recent business trip to Vancouver — my first visit to Canada — I stopped at a Safeway to see if I could find a boxed pastry that a Canadian friend of mine told me to look out for. I saw no Passion Flakies there, but when I took a turn through the cereal aisle I was seized with a sense of profound disorientation as I beheld something I haven’t seen since I was a kid in the 70s: Sugar Crisp cereal. Sometime after 1979 (Lazyweb?) the cereal’s name was changed to “Super Golden Crisp” in the U.S. But not, apparently, in Canada. Given how taboo the word “sugar” is in kid’s products now, the Canadian version felt kind

Future Foody Lazyweb Wish

Noticed at 17:43 June 26th, 2008

http://minjungkim.com/2008/06/26/future-foody-lazyweb-wish/ asks Hoosgot,

Future Foody Lazyweb Wish aka - please if you’re going to bioengineer my food, do something like this. Dear Universe, Engineer for me a flavor neutral root vegetable that, when cooked with meats, absorbs excess fat and maintains distinct and unique solid structure such that said root can be carefully extracted from the frying pan. Said root vegetable could then be easily composted, (leaving my cooking notably less oily but without putting me in harms way by trying to extract oil myself from the pan — this always ends in tragedy). Solution Benefits = Less fat in my cooking. Nutrient-rich ready-made compost. No splatter burns or messy disposal of extra fat. I’ll also take some sort of temperature resistant non-toxic fatsponge

Just about managing

Noticed at 13:43 June 25th, 2008

http://www.roseannesmith.com/2008/06/just-about-managing.shtml asks Hoosgot,

As you know I have recently moved jobs. Himself was slagging me when I told him that I would be writing and managing the IIA’s newsletter as this was something I did in An Chomhdháil as well. In fact I worked on An Chomhdháil’s two newsletters and digest service from inception, during that time moving one of them from one platform to another. I love writing newsletters, I love to get them and I still think a well written and presented newsletter is the digital communication most likely to see results. I’ve seen the results. To many the cost of setting them up may seem prohibitive, but the return on investment, once you have a good writer/ editor is immeasurable.

Administration Hello to new reader ]markteppo! (No birthdays this week. Weird.) Medical Cautious optimism. Dear LazyWeb: Is my iPod dead? It was having issues - freezing and having to be restarted. Finally, it had to be restored to factory settings. Now, I’m on try #3 of getting my songs back on it - it keeps getting hung up on a song (not the same song). (I’m not being impatient here - I mean for hours/overnight). Is it dead, Jim? Ought I to be shopping? (If so, does anyone have the iPod Touch? Is the net connectivity/map stuff worth the reduced capacity and increased price?) ReaderCon Sound off! Who’s coming? All three of us will be there. PiCon Yep, looks like I’ll

Elephant Rentals and why I *hate* bollywood!!!! June 25th, 2008 Dear Lazyweb, DISCLAIMER: THIS IS *SO* NOT MY IDEA!!!! Today, Ms. Robbin Wilber (potentially my future mom-in-law) demanded that I find out about the cost of renting a trained Indian Elephant for the purpose of wedding that is likely to be held in Kolkata sometime next year (2009), with everything else remaining equal. The aforementioned elephant should be trained to carry both the groom and the bride to the wedding reception, should not smell too bad and the elephant agency should preferably accept American credit cards. Those were her stipulations. If any one has an idea about elephant rentals, please drop a line of comment. Apparently its the Bollywood movies that

laptop woes

Noticed at 7:06 June 24th, 2008

http://she.geek.nz/archives/500-lazyweb-laptop-woes.html asks Hoosgot,

Dear Lazyweb, For a long time I have been using a combination of Linux and Mac OS X, I have Linux on my desktop machine at work and Mac OS X on my laptop (a macbook, previously a powerbook). I’ve tried in various times and various ways to run Linux on my mac laptops as well, with varying amounts of fail. These two usages are generally quite happily split. Anything involving writing code has been done in Linux, and if I needed to do anything from my laptop I have a small far less ideal setup, or just ssh to my work machine and work there. My macs have happily supported: syncing with my phone (calendars and contacts), and itunes, and
